It's that time of year when colds and the flu make their rounds. Although apparently the flu isn't as bad this year as it has been, it still can be annoying and cost you time and money.

Step one to avoiding a cold or flu is watching what you eat and drink. Your diet is very important, and determines much of your health. And it's something you can control!

A poor diet is acidic, and disease flourishes in an acidic body. An alkaline body can fight off colds and flues much better, although you don't want to be overly alkaline for long, or that can bring it's own health problems.

Here is the way I fight off the flu and colds:

1. Stop eating all sugar. Sugar (and that includes white flour products) lowers your immunity. Stop drinking sugary soda. (This includes going easy on the juices, unless you are juicing them yourself.) I drink herb tea spiked with a drop of essential oil. Spice for Life, Peppermint, Orange, Lemon and Grapefruit excellent for this. You can use a little raw honey for a sweetener.

2. Take buffered vitamin C with bioflavonoids.

3. Eat nourishing foods like chicken soup with homemade broth.

4. Add all the natural immunity building and cold fighting supplements you can. Some good one are: turmeric, cayenne, garlic, olive leaf extract, goldenseal, astragalus, echinacea, elderberry, forsythia, grape seed extract, green tea, St. John's wort, ginger, licorice, black cumin.

Although most natural medicines are safe, remember to follow the instructions on the bottle or do some research to be sure you are taking the correct amount.

5. Start increasing your essential oil intake. The best ones I've found for this are: Spice for Life, Eucalyptus, Breathe, Peppermint, Lemon, Defence, Oregano (always dilute this oil with a carrier oil because it can burn you), Thyme (may also be hot so dilute as well), Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Juniper, Tea Tree and Holiday Gift.

You can diffuse these oils, use them on your hands and feet, breathe them in deeply, take a hot bath with them (add them to unscented bath salt before adding to the water) and take them internally in teas, and for extra power, put a few drops in veggie caps mixed with a carrier oil, and take several times a day.

6. Take a natural essential oil "alka seltzer"

Recipe:

3/4 c. filtered water (room temp is best)

1/2 t. baking soda (make it 3/4 t. if your water is reverse osmosis or very acidic)

1/2 t. raw honey

Stir these ingredients together. Now carefully add 2 T. lemon juice.

It will fiz and bubble. Stir and wait until it isn't so bubbly.

Now add 1 drop of Be Young Lemon Essential Oil and one drop of Be Young Peppermint Essential Oil. Stir and drink. Take 2 - 4 times a day, starting first thing in the morning.

You may have heard me mention that essential oils have been used for centuries. Today, let's take a look at how they've been used.   

Over 3,000 years ago, one essential oil developed the reputation of benefiting almost every condition known to man from acne to nerve damage. That reputation still holds. Essential oils do have incredibly impressive properties and there's an oil that can help just about anything...

Essential oils are much more than just nice-smelling substances. They have been esteemed for their medicinal and spiritual properties for centuries. For example, in the Middle East, frankincense is considered the "holy anointing oil" and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at His birth.   

This is the oil that was used "to treat every conceivable ill known to man," including acne, wounds, asthma, depression, ulcers, bronchitis, insect and snake bites, cancer, headaches, hemorrhaging, high blood pressure, inflammation, stress, warts and baldness, to name a few.  

Frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. The finest Frankincense oil was reserved for royalty and was forbidden to commoners.  

Researchers today have discovered that frankincense is high in sesquiterpenes, which help stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of emotions) as well as the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. Frankincense is now being researched and used therapeutically in European hospitals and is being investigated for its ability to improve human growth hormone production.  

Let's take a look at a few more essential oils and their uses:  

The Roman historian Dioscorides records that in ancient Rome, galbanum was used for its antispasmodic, diuretic and pain-relieving properties. Geranium, rosewood and lavender have been used for centuries for skin care. Lavender oil is also famed for its ability to speed the healing of burns and promote tissue regeneration.  

During the Middle Ages, Bay laurel (laurus nobilis) was used for angina pectoris, asthma, gout, migraines, palpitation and liver and spleen complaints.  

Lemon oil is well known today for its ability to remove grease. But it also has antiseptic-like properties and contains compounds that have been studied for their effects on immune function. According to Jean Valnet, M.D., the vaporized essence of lemon oil can kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in one hour, Staphylococcus aureus in two hours, and Pneumococcus bacteria within three hours. Even a 0.2 percent solution of lemon oil can kill diphtheria bacteria in 20 minutes and inactivate tuberculosis bacteria.  Lemon oil has been widely used in skin care to cleanse skin and reduce wrinkles.  

Cinnamon bark is one of the most antimicrobial essential oils in existence. It has been produced in Sri Lanka for over 2,000 years. It was used in ancient Egypt, China, and India for culinary and medicinal purposes, and its use has also been documented in the Bible and Torah.  

Recently, researchers found that viruses cannot live in the presence of cinnamon oil. Recent research has also discovered that cinnamon helps lower blood glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.  

Clove bud oil has been used to numb gums and teeth for hundreds of years. Eugenol, clove's principal constituent, is used in its synthetic form in many dental products today.  

The people of Penang depended on the antibacterial properties of the clove trees the flourished on the islands. But in the sixteenth century, Dutch conquerors destroyed the clove trees... and the population, which was decimated from the epidemics that followed. The reason is that clove is extremely antimicrobial. Courmont et al. demonstrated that a solution of .05 percent eugenol from clove oil was sufficient to kill the tuberculosis bacillus.  

The simple oil of myrtle (Myrtus communis) has been researched by Dr. Daniel Pénoël for normalizing hormonal imbalances of the thyroid and ovaries, as well a balancing the hypothyroid. It has also been researched for its soothing effects on the respiratory system.  

The essential oil of thyme (thymus vulgaris) has powerful antimicrobial properties and has been used for respiratory problems, the prevention and treatment of infection, gastritis, bronchitis, pertussis, asthma, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. The Egyptians used thyme for embalming.   

Sandalwood oil has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. It was used traditionally for skin revitalization, yoga, and meditation.  

Pine was first investigated by Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, for its benefits to the respiratory system. In 1990, Drs. Pénoël and Franchomme described pine oil's antiseptic properties in their medical textbook. Pine is used in massage for stressed muscles and joints. It shares many of the same properties as Eucalyptus globulus, enhancing the action of both oils when blended. American Indians stuffed mattresses with pine to repel lice and fleas. It was used to treat lung infections and even added to baths and revitalize those suffering from mental or emotional fatigue.  

Helichrysum has been studied by European researchers for regenerating tissue and nerves and improving circulation and skin conditions.  

These are just some of the many, myriad uses of essential oils. In addition, essential oils make great green household cleaners and can add fantastic flavors to your food.

Be Young Essential Oils Secret #4- Essential Oils Are Incredibly Powerful Antioxidant

Here's the fourth lesson of the 7 Secrets of Essential Oils. You may have been hearing a lot about antioxidants and how they fight free radicals and help you stay younger. You may also be inundated with supplements and antioxidant drinks that claim to have extremely high antioxidant levels. While their levels may be high in comparison to normal foods or supplements, they pale in comparison to certain essential oils. Let me explain...

Many essential oils are the highest antioxidants on earth! One essential oil, which I'll tell you about later, is the highest-scoring single ingredient ever tested for its antioxidant capacity on the ORAC scale! And other essential oils come close.   

What does this mean to you?  

It means that the powerful antioxidants in essential oils create unfriendly environments for damaging free radicals. They may prevent mutation, fungus, and oxidation in cells, and work as free-radical scavengers.   

What is an Antioxidant, Exactly?  

An antioxidant is a substance that acts to slow down or prevent the oxidation of another chemical. It is a substance that protects cells in the body against free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced during normal metabolism or as a result of an unhealthy diet or exposure to pollution, tobacco smoke and chemicals. Free radical damage may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Antioxidants are found naturally in many foods, including fruits, vegetables and nuts, and can also be found in nutritional supplement form.  

The human body comes with an amazing system of checks and balances. Antioxidants balance out the damage of the free radicals. Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" that prevent and repair the damage done by free radicals.  

What is Oxidation?

In its simplest definition, oxidation is the loss of electrons. An example oxidation turns good fat into rancid fat. This process creates toxicity in the body and causes damage to DNA. This is what causes aging and illness.  

That's not to say that all oxidation is bad. A certain amount of oxidation reactions are crucial for life. However, too much oxidation is damaging. That's why plants and animals have well worked out systems that use multiple types of antioxidants.  

What Prevents Too Much Oxidation?  

Antioxidants prevent or slow oxidative damage to our body. In order to function optimally and maintain health and youth, there must be sufficient antioxidants in the system. In fact, low levels of antioxidants in the body (or if the antioxidant enzymes are not working well), causes oxidative stress which start chain reactions that damage and even kill cells.  

Antioxidants stop these chain reactions by removing free radicals and preventing the formation of new free radicals. They also inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. Antioxidants can come in the form of vitamins, minerals, or enzymes.  

What Can Antioxidants Do For You?  

1. Antioxidants can prevent serious health issues: Oxidative damage causes health problems like heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer, joint problems, arthritis, etc. Antioxidants are one of the basic mechanisms in our body to boost immune function and lower the risk of infection. Antioxidants also prevent the fats in your body from going rancid and becoming toxic waste which can cause cell death.  

2. Antioxidants can help keep you younger: Because of the protective action of antioxidants, they can keep you looking, feeling and functioning younger. That's why antioxidants have become such an important factor in anti-aging products today.  

Where Are Antioxidants Found?  

Antioxidants are found in fruits, vegetables, beans, eggs, some meats, whole grains and essential oils. In fact, essential oils are some of the highest antioxidant substances in the world.  

Clove oil, for example, is a highly antioxidant oil. Clove is the highest-scoring single ingredient ever tested for its antioxidant capacity on the ORAC scale.

ORAC stands for the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). This score is a test-tube analysis that measures the antioxidant levels of food and other chemical substances. If a food has a high ORAC score, it means the food is high in antioxidants. With the ORAC score, a higher score means the food is better at countering the negative effects associated with free radicals.  

Clove oil measures 1,078,700 ute/100g on the ORAC score, which is simply phenomenal.

Thanks for joining us again for the third lesson of the 7 Secrets of Essential Oils. Today, we're looking at a surprising fact that can mean a lot to your health and the health of your family...

Be Young's Essential Oil Secret #3-
Essential Oils Are Just as Effective against Viruses and Fungus as They Are Against Bacteria

Modern medicine today has many antibiotics to fight bacteria, a few medications to fight fungus, but they have little to offer to fight viruses. They want people to believe that nothing exists that can help them fight viruses.

Not true.

I already mentioned in Secret #1 that the Spice for Life® essential oils were tested and found to be 99.968 percent effective against airborne bacteria. Those airborne bacteria include viruses just as
much as bacteria.

But the Spice for Life blend isn't the only essential oil that is effective against viruses. Many oils that have antimicrobial action, such as oregano, thyme, ravensara, clove, lemon, cinnamon, rosemary and others are also effective against viruses and bacteria. Oils containing limonene have been shown to be antiviral.

The essential oils of thyme, cumin, clove, caraway, rosemary and sage all possess antifungal properties. rate against airborne bacteria. Spice for Life also dramatically inhibits the growth of many types of drug-resistant bacteria L-forms (both gram negative and gram positive), including Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus aureus (staph is one of the most difficult bacteria to control).

The 99.968 percent kill rate was against the toughest gram negative bacteria, Pseudomona aeruginosa - a bacteria that is far more resistant to antiseptics because of its thick cell wall. But thick cell walls do not deter the effects of essential oils.

In general, most essential oils that are antibacterial and antimicrobial are also anti-viral. In addition, many essential oils are anti-infectious, anti-cancerous, anti-tumoral, and anti-parasitic all at once.

But let’s be clear that we are only talking about pure and potent E.O.B.B.D essential oils here, not cheap imitations. Today, far too many essential oils on the market are completely or partially synthetic. They are created in a laboratory by chemists who have figured out how to recreate the main constituents and fragrances of the most popular oils in the laboratory with chemicals.

These synthetic oils totally lack therapeutic benefits and may even carry risks of chemical toxicity. They may cause irritations and allergies. Chemicals are easily absorbed through the skin due to its permeability. Once absorbed, they can become trapped in the fatty sub dermal layers where
they can leach into the blood stream.

The truth is, it is impossible to manufacture all the molecules and isomers contained in naturally grown essential oil in a laboratory. The only way to get the benefits of essential oils is by using pure and potent E.O.B.B.D. oils.

The next secret will give you a look into the stratospheric antioxidant levels of many essential oils. Antioxidants are tremendously important to health and anti-aging, but very few substances on this earth can come close to the astoundingly high antioxidant levels of essential oils.

Be Young's Essential Oil Secret #2- Bacteria CANNOT Build Up Resistance To Essential Oils

In l985, Dr. Jean C. Lapraz stated that, according to his research, no microbe could survive in the presence of the essential oils of cinnamon or oregano.

This bold statement seems even bolder today than in 1985 because of the intense lobbying, advertising, regulating and conditioning the pharmaceutical and medical industry has been doing in the last couple of decades discrediting natural substances and trying to get people to believe that only drugs can kill germs.

Yet drugs fail with regularity. Each drug is only effective on a limited number of germs or microbes - and those microbes tend to develop immunity to that drug very quickly or are morphed into L-forms.

Stronger and stronger drugs have to be used, but that doesn't stop the bacteria. They continue to develop resistance to the stronger drugs. There are already several immune-resistant bacteria that modern medicine has no answer for.

Yet, Dr. Jean C. Lapraz stated that NO MICROBE could survive in the presence of the essential oils of cinnamon or oregano. It was true then and it is still true now.

Bacteria and microbes simply cannot develop resistance to pure and potent essential oils (we're not talking about the cheap diluted essential oils you find at the drug store or health food store. Dr. Lapraz was referring to the highest quality essential oils only).

The reason for this is that essential oils are very complex. As soon as a microbe tries to outsmart one constituent, it's hit from the side with another, from the back with another, from the other side with another, and from the front again with another, and another... Germs, bacteria and microbes are left defenseless.

Essential oils are not simple substances. They are mosaics of hundreds, or even thousands, of different natural chemicals. The average essential oil may contain anywhere from 80 to 1600 chemical constituents. Many contain even more in minute quantities, yet they all contribute to the oil's therapeutic effects.

The bottom line is that the complex chemistry of essential oils makes them ideal for killing and preventing the spread of bacteria, since microorganisms have an impossible time mutating in the presence of so many different antiseptic compounds.

Another reason germs and bacteria have a hard time developing immunity to essential oils is because of the variability in the oils. Chemical drugs are always uniform. They contain exactly the same amounts of constituents in the same proportions every time. It's easy for microbes to develop defenses to a substance that is completely predictable and unchanging.

But plants grow a little differently every time depending on the weather, soil, amount of nutrients in the soil and other natural factors. This creates subtle, but detectable variations in the chemical constituents of essential oils, so no two oils are exactly alike in structure or effects. The wide variety of compounds in essential oils makes the mutation of microorganisms extremely difficult. In case you're wondering, here are a few of the main constituents found in essential oils:

   • Alcohols
   • Aldehydes
   • Esters
   • Ethers
   • Ketones
   • Phenols
   • Terpenes

Each of these can be broken down into numerous smaller units. Each constituent has its own action, or effects. A single oil may have several actions.

For example aldehydes; found in lavender and chamomile, are antimicrobial and calming. The ketones found in lavender, hyssop and patchouly stimulate cell regeneration. Whereas phenols, found in oregano and thyme oil, are highly antimicrobial. The eugenol found in cinnamon and clove is antiseptic and stimulating. Other constituents in clove make it antitumoral.

This is just a brief glance at the chemistry of essential oils. It takes years of study to fully comprehend it. But hopefully this gives you an idea or the complexity of essential oil chemistry. This complex chemistry produces many diverse effects of essential oils, including antimicrobial effects.

Safe Homemade Air Fresheners and Natural Cleaners

The first thing to greet your guests as they enter your home is the aroma, and that impression will be long lasting. The unique aromatic fingerprint says a great deal about everyone in the house. Are you smokers? Do you have pets? What kind of food do you cook? Or do you have a mold issue?

If you want a clean smelling home, and yet you want to avoid using air fresheners that are dangerous to you and your family's health, here are some great ideas for safe natural ways to clean and freshen the air your home. Homemade air fresheners can be very inexpensive, effective, and much safer than some commercial air fresheners.

Keep your home’s air smelling fresh by identifying and removing sources of bad odors. Remove the cause of the offending smell, whether by drying and cleaning off mold, removing rotting food or other material. One common source of bad smells is your garbage can. Empty the trash regularly and frequently.

Make sure you've got a lot of fresh air circulating through your house. Open the windows and turn on fans as much as possible, to let the bad air out. Even in the most polluted cities, the outdoor air has been found to be less toxic than the indoor air.

Use natural minerals like baking soda and borax to control common odor sources like trash cans, and to deodorize when you clean. Baking soda not only absorbs odors naturally in the refrigerator, but other places as well. Baking soda is inexpensive and has many household uses.

A couple sticks of cinnamon in a closet can freshen the air. Or simmer spices like cinnamon and cloves in a little water on the stove top to fill the entire house with a great, clean scent. This works well if you're expecting company and want everything to smell tantalizing. You can also simmer 4 lemons (cut in fourths) on the stove for about 45 minutes to an hour to obtain a wonderful lemon fragrance that is non-toxic. Or you can bake the lemons in an oven for about 45 minutes for a similar effect.

Grind lemon peels in your garbage disposal for a more pleasant smell.

Make a homemade air freshener spray using vinegar. In an empty spritzer or spray bottle, combine one part white vinegar with five parts water. Spray this mixture into the air, being careful to keep the mixture from getting into your eyes. As the vinegar evaporates, the unpleasant odors in the air will evaporate right along with it.

For tougher jobs, you might want to use a homemade air freshener that consists of one part vinegar with one part water. You can also pour some white vinegar, undiluted, into one or two bowls, depending on the size of the room. Set the bowls in the room with the offensive smell, making sure they're out of the reach of children. It might take a few hours to notice the effects, but it's worth the wait, especially if you're trying to get rid of tobacco smoke odor.

To battle offensive cooking odors, try this. Fill a pot with water. Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar for every cup of water in the pot. Heat the water on the stove on a low to medium setting. After half an hour or so, remove the pot from the stove. As the smell of vinegar fades, so will the fish, cabbage, or onion smell you're trying to get rid of.

Try filling your home with plants. They can effectively clean the air by removing airborne toxins and releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere, improving the air quality. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) and rubber tree (Ficus elastic) are especially good. Research by NASA found that a single spider plant could reduce dangerous levels of toxins in a room by 96 per cent in 24 hours. Add a few potted plants to each room. They look great, and at the same time they're also helping to purify the air.

If odors are still troubling you, invest in an air purifier with activated carbon filtration.

My favorite safe air fresheners-- use pure natural essential oils to help disinfect and add fragrance to your home. Plus high quality essential oils will destroy airborne toxic particles, as well as having positive side effects and health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, helping you mentally focus better, or elevating your mood.

Find essential oils with fragrances you enjoy. Some good ones are orange, lemon, grapefruit, lavender, geranium, rose, mint and eucalyptus. I love to use some of Be Young's blends as air fresheners, like Spice for Life, Harvest, Holiday Gift, Bliss and Romance.

Add a few drops of essential oils to organic cotton balls and put them around the house, or add them to homemade potpourri or unscented candle wax. (Be careful of the potpourri and fragrant candles you buy in the store. They most often have toxic synthetic fragrances added to them.)

Add a few drops of essential oils to purified water in a spray bottle, and spray around you home to freshen and disinfect the air.

To keep the garbage can smelling fresh and nice, add a couple drops of essential oils to the bottom of your garbage can.(You can do this with or without baking soda).

There are many ways you can use essential oils to freshen your home and kill germs and bacterial.

To freshen the air and kill germs- Add 10 drops of Lemon oil to 2 cups of filtered (chlorine free) water in a mister bottle and shake before using. (Just keep it from directly touching your wood surfaces to prevent water stains.)

You can also spritz it over your carpet, or mix the oil into some baking soda and sprinkle it over the carpet, then just vacuum and voila!

Spray your home before bedtime so when you get up in the morning it will welcome you as you wake up.

Spray your plants- Shake and spray a fine mist around the plant and wipe the leaves down. You may also use this to spray near the curtains.

For pets- mist on carpet and areas they frequently use.

A cool air essential oil diffuser is very convenient. Just place it on a counter, add the essential oil and let it go. It diffuses the oil into the air in tiny molecules matching the alveoli in your lungs, so when you breathe it in, your body accepts it readily.

You may also boil water in a small container on your stove, turn off the heat, and then add a few drops of your favorite oil. Simmer lightly to allow the oils waft into the air for a pleasant fragrance.

Put 4 drops of oil on a tissue, place it near a fan or air conditioner vent or use one of the essential oils on an air pad to freshen the air and kill the germs.

Essential oils can be left in the dresser drawer or closet to infuse the clothes. Take a cotton ball and add a few drops of Orange, Lemon and/or Geranium and tuck them in the corners of your clothes drawers.

Try to coordinate your choice of oils not only with the time of day but also the season of the year. Use a light, refreshing oil or mix in the summer and one that is warming during the winter months.

Spring/Summer Blend:
10 drops Lemon
4 drops Geranium
2 drops Sandalwood
2 drops Lavender

Also try Lemon, Orange, Geranium and Lemongrass- very uplifting. Bliss and Blossom are wonderful feel-good floral blends.

Autumn/Winter Blend:
8 drops Orange
3 drops Frankincense
3 drops Cypress
2 drops Juniper Berry

Or use the spicy essential oil blends like Spice for Life, Harvest or Holiday Gift. These are especially nice at Christmas time.

More essential oils and blends to use as air fresheners:

Emotion blend freshens your home and helps you balance your emotions.

To energize add Peppermint to the water. Just spritz it into the air. (Be careful not to spray near the eyes.)

For a fresh and light fragrance anytime use: Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemongrass or Venus blend. Also try mixing Geranium or Lavender with your citrus oils.

For an amazing aroma:
10 drops Geranium
5 drops Peppermint
2 drops Chiro Touch mixed into 2 cups of water

For a relaxing living room:
8 drops Geranium
3 drops Clary-sage
5 drops Lemon
3 drops Bergamot

For a stimulating living room:
8 drops Orange
4 drops Lavender
4 drops Lemon
2 drops Basil

The clean kitchen blend:
8 Drops Lavender
10 Drops Lemon
5 Drops Eucalyptus
8 Drops Orange
3 Drops Rosemary
2 drops Oregano

This is a wonderful synergy blend which does not contain phenols and toxic chemicals as something like Pine-Sol will. Add it to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. It's great to use on a cloth or added to your rinse water for cleaning and disinfecting around the whole house.

Also for washing Kitchen surfaces:
10 drops Tea Tree
10 drops Lemon
5 drops Eucalyptus
3 drops Lavender
2 drops Thyme

Add to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle, or choose one oil and use a drop or two on a wet cloth.

Butcher Blocks- Prevent E-coli and Salmonella and eliminate odors by using 2 drops Oregano and 10 drops Lemon in a spritzer bottle. Be careful when using Oregano essential oil, as it is a very HOT oil. Do not get it near the eyes or on the skin.

Refrigerator & Stove- Add 1 drop of Lemon and Orange to the final rinse water when cleaning inside and out.

Dishwasher- Add 2 drops Lemon into the dispenser to help clean, disinfect and prevent spotting.

Don't use the synthetic lemon cleaners you find in the store, which are toxic. Use the real thing-- pure lemon essential oil is safe and non-toxic.

Colds or Flu in your home? Add Rosemary plus a citrus oil-- about 8 drops of each oil into 2 cups of water. Also Breathe blend or Eucalyptus are great for helping build the immune and respiratory systems.

Bacteria Buster:
10 drops Spice For Life
10 drops Lemon

Warning -- The Dangers of Using Air Fresheners!

I know we all want clean smelling homes, but there are other safer and more natural ways to make your home smell nice than using the air fresheners, air deodorizers and synthetically scented candles you find in most stores.

For years I have avoided air fresheners and deodorizers. They give me headaches and make me feel sick. When I started raising fancy finches and canaries, I learned that I should never use air fresheners and scented candles around them. It kills them. That made me think about the canaries that miners used to take into the mines, many years ago. When the air became poisonous, the sensitive canary would sicken and die first, and the miners would know they needed to leave the mine fast, before they suffered the same fate. I took the canary warning about air fresheners seriously, as confirmation that I needed to avoid them.

Studies are now showing what many of us have suspected for years, that air fresheners can be extremely dangerous to you and your family's health. This is particularly true for pregnant women, infants and people with respiratory problems.

Air fresheners work in one of, or in a combination of, the following four ways:

1) by killing your ability to smell by way of a nerve-deadening chemical.
2) by coating your nasal passages with an undetectable oily film.
3) by covering up one smell with another.
4) (rarely) by breaking down the offensive odor.

Despite their name, air fresheners do little or nothing to freshen the air.

In 2002, the EPA researchers who were testing air freshening units that plug into electrical sockets determined that when the fragrance chemicals in these products react with common indoor air pollutants they produce serious health hazards.

Some of the chemicals react with ozone, a common outdoor and indoor air pollutant, creating formaldehyde and a variety of related chemicals which have been shown to be toxic and may cause respiratory distress. Formaldehyde is also often a prominent constituent in many of these products. A few of the other toxic chemicals in air fresheners and plug-ins are: benzyl alcohol and benzene derivatives, aldehydes, camphor, dichlorobenzene, ethanol, limonene, naphthalene, phenol, cresol and pinene.

Some of the less adverse effects that come from exposure to the chemicals in air fresheners are: irritated eyes, nose & throat, headache, anaphylaxis, respiratory distress, dizziness, lung irritation, fatigue, confusion, nausea. The synthetic toxic chemicals found in synthetic fragrances and air fresheners have also been implicated in cancer, neurological damage, reproductive and developmental disorders, liver damage, miscarriages and can aggravate asthma and/or trigger attacks.

Recently the Natural Resources Defense Council, a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting public health and the environment. has issued a warning concerning chemicals in household air fresheners that could affect hormones and reproductive development, especially in babies. The NRDC tested 14 different brands of household air fresheners, and the results showed that 12 out of the 14 contained the hormone-disrupting chemicals known as phthalates. Some of the ones that tested positive even claimed to be natural and unscented. Even more disturbing, is the fact that none of the air freshener products had phthalates listed in their ingredients.

Synthetic fragrances are not listed on the manufacturer labels for the consumer to see because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) protects the use of fragrance under the provision of “trade secrets” established for the perfume industry many years ago. The fragrance industry uses over 4000 chemical ingredients to make their products and over 80% of these chemicals have not been tested for their toxicity. Even the chemicals used to produce the fragrance in a product that we know are toxic are protected under trade secret laws and are not even listed in the ingredients of a product.

Currently, the United States federal government tests less than 10% of air fresheners on the market for toxicity and any kind of health risks. At least one-third, and up to 80% of the chemical additives used in perfume and air fresheners are known to be toxic, so it's really another area of "buyer beware."

Personally, I am aware of at least three pregnant women who lost their unborn babies and found out later that it was due to heavy usage of air fresheners, air deodorizers, and synthetically scented candles. If you are pregnant and/or have young children, or you know someone who does, share this warning with them. It may be the difference between life and death!

Wow! Just when I think the Be Young Boot Camps and Conventions can't possibly get any better, they do it again! Lots of new products and new stuff to learn. Awesome! Check out the video below to see a little of what we did!

Homemade Laundry Soap and Household Cleaner Recipes

Most commercial detergents and cleaners are filled with harsh chemicals, and even the natural alternatives usually contain some toxic ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Most commercial detergents leave harsh perfumes, chemical brighteners, and/or fabric softeners on your clothes to cover up for the fact that the detergent really did not clean anything. Many of these additives cause skin irritations and allergic reactions for sensitive people. I am trying to avoid all unnecessary toxins, (we get enough toxins as it is!) so I've been researching homemade soaps and cleaners. Below are some safer natural alternatives, and what is really exciting is that they are much more inexpensive too!

Homemade Laundry Soap Recipe

This makes lots of homemade laundry detergent for only pennies per load. These days every little bit we can save helps!

   •   1 bar Fels Naptha soap
   •   1 cup Washing Soda
   •   1 cup Borax (sodium borate)*
   •   1/2 cup liquid castile soap
   •   10 drops of your favorite essential oil (lemon, lavender, tea tree, rosemary or ?)**
   •   Aprox. 2 gallons water

Grate bar soap and melt in 1 quart of very hot water. Add liquid castile soap. Pour into a large bucket. Add enough hot water to make 2 gallons. Add the washing soda and borax and stir well. It is normal for it to thicken, gel and get lumpy as it cools. Pour into old laundry detergent bottles, if desired. Use about 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup per load. Shake before using. It doesn't suds very much, if at all, but it does do a great job cleaning clothes.

I found the Fels Naptha soap at our local True Value Hardware store. I found the Borax and the Washing Soda (not baking soda) in the laundry soap area, on the bottom shelf, at our local Walmart. I usually get the castile soap from a health food store. You can also do the recipe without the castile soap, if you wish, to save even more money.

We have very hard water here in Arizona, so this works well for me. If you don't, you may have to adjust the recipe for your area, add more water, or try using less.

Recipe for Homemade All-Purpose Household Cleaner

   •   3 cups of hot water
   •   2 Tablespoons of vinegar
   •   1/4 cup of Borax (sodium borate)*
   •   1 Tablespoon of phosphate-free dishwashing liquid (like Seventh Generation)
   •    5 drops of your favorite essential oil (lemon, lavender, tea tree, rosemary or ?)**

Mix well and store in a spray bottle. Use as you would any commercial cleaner.

* There is a lot of chatter on the Internet about the safety of Borax, so I did research on it. According to most experts, Borax is a natural mineral, with a low toxicity profile. Borax is safe to use as long as you do it with common sense, keep it away from cuts, don't ingest it, and don't let your pets or children eat or play with it.

Why Not All Essential Oils are Created Equal

If you look around at different companies, you will find a huge range of prices on essential oils. It makes you wonder "why?" Isn't lavender oil just lavender oil, no matter what company makes it?

Well actually there are vast differences in the essential oils from different companies. There are many different ways to extract the essential oil, and many companies take the less expensive route (athough you can't always trust the price to reflect that). Some companies extract with dangerous chemicals. Some use high heat, which does not preserve the plant's fragile healing power in the oil. Some add chemical fragrance to enhance their poor quality oil. And most commonly the company will cut the oil with a large amount of carrier oil like almond or jojoba.

Even if you find a rare essential oil company that makes pure essential oils without any of the above, there are still differences in the plants they choose. Let's look at lavender for example. A lavender plant can have very different constituents depending on many variable factors.

Is the lavender plant the very best variety for use as a healing therapeutic oil, of the over 200 types of lavender found, or is it mostly just fragrance? Most companies will use a cheaper poor quality hybrid lavender instead of a stronger therapeutic plant that costs more and is harder to find. Many companies don't even know the difference.

How was the plant raised? Was it grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers, is it organic, or is it from the wild? Was the plant grown at sea level or on a mountain side? 5 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Antibacterial Gels and Soaps

There are so many reports these days of frightening diseases and superbugs, it is no wonder that many people rely on antibacterial products to protect themselves and their families. Unfortunately, it gives them a false sense of security.

Here are five reasons why you should avoid using antibacterial soaps, lotions and hand gels:

1. They contain triclosan and dioxins which are toxic carcinogens (cancer causing agents) and linked to disruptions of hormonal function. When tap water meets triclosan, it reacts freely with the chlorine in the tap water to become chloroform (a chlorinated aromatic) which is similar to the dioxins found in the compound Agent Orange. Exposure to triclosan and dioxinscan cause reproductive and developmental problems and damage the immune system as well.

2. Triclosan and dioxins are now polluting our nations rivers and lakes after being released into them with treated wastewater. When you use them and they go down the drain, you may be helping to pollute the environment.

3. Antibacterial products are just as harmful to you as they are to the bacteria they do kill. They work by destroying elements of the bacterial cellular structure, but they can't tell the difference between your good body cells and the bacteria's cells, so they can easily cause you harm as well.

4. Antibacterial products play a role in the evolution of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Superbugs, like strains of tuberculosis and staph (MRSA-methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) that are resistant to antibacterial products are now showing up, and hospitals and people that rely on the constant use of them are actually helping spread these superbugs.

5. Antibacterial products don't even work well to kill bacteria. It takes approximately 5 to 20 minutes for an antibacterial product to kill bacteria, so a quick wash with antibacterial soap won't do much. An antibacterial gel hand sanitizer with isopropyl alcohol evaporates within seconds of application, making the antibacterial properties in it useless.

So what can you do to protect your self and your family? Thankfully there are safe and natural alternatives.

Bed bugs are becoming a modern plague of global epidemic proportions, and the United States is having biggest bed bug outbreak since World War II. This problem is so bad that it has even prompted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to hold its first-ever bedbug summit.

Bed bugs are not just something that affects the poor or the messy, but are now found in even the finest of hotels and taken home to residences all over the world. There are very hard to get rid of and very easy to spread. It only takes one bed bug hiding in your suitcase or clothing to start an infestation problem in your home. (There are some places in the United States that are becoming totally infested with these annoying insects.)

Bed bugs are not just found in hotels, they are also now plaguing apartments, schools, hospitals, care centers, cabins, camps, airports, taxi's, buses, theaters, even department stores, offices and more! Bed bugs can be easily transported to your home from any of these public places.

Where do bed bugs come from and what causes them?

Homes and other places can become infested with bedbugs because:

bugs and eggs "hitchhiked in" on clothing and luggage,

from infested items like furniture or clothes that you bring into your home

from a nearby close dwelling

or from wild animals or pets at your house.

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are a tiny insect that can be seen with the human eye, if you know what to look for, but they hide in cracks and crevices of mattresses, furniture and other hidden spots and don't come out until dark. They are flat, brown/red bugs about 1/4 inch long, shaped like an apple seed.

Bed bugs live off blood and usually feed in the night while you are sleeping. Although they often hide in places near where you sleep, they can easily take over your whole house.

Bed bugs like to feed about every three days, but they can live up to a year without feeding. Young bed bug nymphs can live for months without food. They cause little or no pain while feeding on your blood, which only takes about 5 minutes, but the wound may swell and itch for days. Like other insect bites, some people have more of an allergic reaction to bed bug bites than others.

Super Bed Bugs

Bed bugs have become "super-bugs" in some ways. The are developing a strong resistance to chemical bug sprays including insecticides as strong as DDT. Because Americans use so much pesticides and cleaning chemicals, it makes the bugs much more resistant to them, and the humans much more sucessible to the toxins. Using stronger and stronger chemicals and pesticides will only create an army of super-bed bugs that will be totally resistant, while reeking havok with nature.

If you have an infestation, clean your living areas with any one of many natural bug killers. They may take a bit longer to work than the pesticide kind, but they're much safer for your and your family, and more effective in the long run.

How to avoid bed bug problems and protect yourself while traveling.

Taking the time to look for and avoid bed bugs when you are on vacation or traveling can save you time, frustration and a lot of money in the long run. It is easier to avoid bringing bed bugs home, than it is to get rid of them.

For Travel Protection:

* Use washable bags instead of hard suitcases for traveling.

* Avoid putting clothes in drawers of hotels. Don't put your luggage on the floor or near the bed.

* Look for bedbug feces that look like tiny black specks, as well as small rust colored stains on bed sheets, mattresses, linens, carpets, furniture, etc.

* Use the Be Young Essential Oil Bed Bug Recipe (Formula) where ever you go for prevention.

10 drops of Copaiba

Put all this in a spray bottle and spray. This is safe everyone, including children and pets. It should be safe to use on most furniture, carpets and fabric, but it doesn't hurt to check first to be sure.

Avoiding Egg Salmonella & Other Food Poisoning With Essential Oils

The best way to avoid salmonella poisoning with store bought eggs is to be sure the egg is fully cooked before eating it, but sometimes we can't control all our circumstances.

If you are worried about eggs you have eaten recently, the symptoms of salmonella poisoning are: fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramping that starts approximately 12 – 72 hours after consuming the tainted foods. Most healthy people recover on their own without seeing a doctor or hospital, although infants and the elderly should seek medical attention. It may take 4 - 7 days to recover fully.

If you take certain essential oils at the first sign of food poisoning, you can often avoid sickness. Be Young Essential Oil has a blend called Digest that is wonderful for this and other intestinal problems. Try putting a drop or two on the back of your hand and licking it off (called the "Lick Trick") as soon as you start feeling sick. Also you can rub 5-10 drops on your abdomen every 15 minutes until the symptoms subside.

Other essential oils may be good for this as well, including peppermint, fennel, and dill oils. Oregano oil has been shown in a Georgetown University study to stop food poisoning due to it's antifungal and antibacterial properties. (Always use a carrier oil like grapeseed oil with oregano essential oil because it is hot and may burn you.)

Don't ever use an essential oil internally that is not EOBBD certified as safe and pure. Most essential oils are tainted with fillers and toxins used to extract the oil, and can be dangerous.

How To Tell if Your Pure Essential Oils are Really Pure.

Warning-- most essential oils on the market are not pure, even if the label can legally say they are 100% pure. Some of these store bought essential oils are not only ineffective, but they can be harmful.

At least 95% of all essential oils sold in the U.S. are made in a way that destroys much of plant compounds, making the oils mostly ineffective for healing purposes. These are called perfume grade essential oils. They might smell the same and look the same, but they are usually cut with other cheaper oils, like synthetic oils. Or they use carrier oils, like almond oil, to save money (which is why they can get rancid). Often these oil are extracted with cheaper techniques that use toxic solvants like hexane, or they use pressure or heat which ruins their potency.

Our company tests the oils from other companies and we have yet to find an oil that has not been compromised in some way. One popular company came out with an oil blend similar to one of ours, but it was in a base of 90% almond oil. (That means that you need 10 bottles of theirs to equal one bottle of ours- assuming all other oils were equal). Another company had a frankensense that was 98% diluted with other oils-- and both companies said their oils were 100% pure.

Since there are very few legal standards for essential oils in the US, anything can and is being sold as an essential oil. How can you tell if your oil is really pure or not?

There are several ways to test your oils-

1) Did your oil go rancid? Do your oils warn that they will only be good for a few years? Those are not pure essential oils. Most true essential oils last for centuries. Essential oils have been found in good condition in some Pharos tombs in the pyramids in Egypt. True pure essential oils do not go rancid.

2) Some essential oils now use fillers that don't go rancid like jojoba oil, so the next test is to see how oily your oil feels. Does it penetrate into the skin fast? A true essential oil should disappear into the skin quickly. Of course, if your oil says don't use it straight on the skin-- please don't do that, because it definitely isn't pure!) Pure essential oils can be used neat (straight on the skin)-- with the small exception of some very hot oils like Thyme and Oregano. Now, If you are using hot oils like oregano and thyme neat on the skin and they are not uncomfortable, then that is a good sign your oils are diluted.

3) Does your oil evaporate too quickly? If you leave the bottle open, does it all disappear in a day or two. That's not a true essential oil, either. True essential oils don't "flash" away that fast.

3) Does your essential oil work for you? Does your essential oil have any real therapeutic value or is it just a fragrance? You should be able to tell by the response of your body if your oil is working for you or not.

The one fool-proof way you can know for sure that the oil you want to purchase is truly a pure therapeutic essential oil, is to only buy E.O.B.B.D. certified essential oils. Natural Shampoo with Essential Oils

Ingredients:
1/2 cup filtered water
1/2 cup liquid unscented castile soap
1 teaspoon organic coconut oil
5-10 drops each of Rosemary, Thyme, Birch, Peppermint, Lavender and/or Lemon Essential Oils (any single or combination of those oils. They are all good for the hair and scalp.)

Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together in a blender and then pour shampoo in a bottle. You can use this shampoo daily if you want.

* For dry hair try substituting organic aloe vera gel for the water.

How to Use Essential Oils - Part 1: Important Cautions

*Warning: Just because something is natural, it doesn't mean it is always safe-- poisons are natural too. Almost all brands of essential oils are diluted or made with poor ingredients, and many of the oils you can buy in stores are extracted with toxic ingredients or mixed with synthetics. It is very possible to get an allergic reaction to them.

If you are using store bought oils, you will want to mix them with a lot of a good quality carrier oil like grapeseed or almond oil. It will dilute and slow down the toxic effects of these oils. It will also dilute and slow down the beneficial effects these oils may have, but that can't be helped if you want to be safe. If you get a reaction from any of these oils, of course, please stop using them immediately.

True therapeutic pure organic and wild crafted oils, like Be Young Essential Oils, are safe and non-toxic, but some people may be sensitive to them. If you develop a reaction or irritation, you should add a carrier oil to your skin.

Most Be Young Essential Oils can be applied safely neat (that means straight on the skin.) There are a few that are so powerful they can be uncomfortable (they are called "hot" oils), such as oregeno and thyme, so be sure to use a carrier oil with these.

Avoid getting essential oils on mucous membranes, particularly full strength as they may cause pain and irritation. This sometimes happens when people add essential oils to their bath water. (Not a good idea-- remember that oil and water don't mix.) The best way to add the essential oils to your bath is to put the oils in a bath salt like Be Youngs's Star Flake dendrick salt or epsom salt, and then add the bath salt to the water. You can also add it you your unscented bubble bath or bath oil.

If you do get essential oils on mucous membranes or other sensitive areas, do not try to wash essential oils off with water! Water will drive the oil deeper into the skin. Dilute it with a carrier oil.

If you get essential oils in your eyes or where you don't want them, quickly add any edible vegetable oil (olive is good) that is available to dilute the essential oils.

Some essential oils thin the blood. Be careful with the following oils if you are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners): Angelica, Anise, Idaho Balsam Fir, Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Clary Sage, Clove, Idaho Tansy.

Take care with the following phototoxic oils-- they can cause a rash or pigmentation when used on skin and exposed to the sun: Basil, Bergamot, Dill, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Lovage, Mandarin, Orange, Tangerine, and Verbina. You can still use them-- just apply the oils on your feet and wear socks.

Dilute all oils for small children and pets!

"Science is now beginning to acknowledge the value of the healing substances found in essential oils.

Clinical research has shown that essential oils are highly anti-viral and anti- infectious. In 1995, Dr. Jean C. Lapraz discovered that there are two essential oils in which no bacteria or virus could survive. This is a significant breakthrough since there are so many life threatening viruses and drug resistant bacteria. A recent study done at Weber University has proven that four essential oils will kill 100% of the bacteria and virus in any room where they are diffused.

Doctors once predicted antibiotics would vanquish infectious diseases. But the bugs are rapidly overwhelming today's medicines. Bacteria naturally evolve to avoid antibiotics, a process first spotted just five years after penicillin's debut in the 1940s. But resistance appears to have speeded up in the last decade, largely because antibiotics are being overused giving the germs more chances to mutate.

Dr. Valnet points out that pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria do not become resistant to essential oils as they do to modern-day synthetic antibiotic drugs. He states, "Infectious microbes do not appear to become accustomed to the essential oils as they do to the many forms of treatment using antibiotics." One reason virus and bacteria cannot mutate with the essential oils is because of the chemical constituents that make up essential oils. One essential oil can have anywhere from 200- 800 chemical constituents. It is impossible for a virus to mutate and adapt to that many chemical constituents. Drugs are made by isolating one or two constituents. A virus can easily mutate and adapt to the drug, making it useless.

Although the powerful medicinal value of essential oils is only now being rediscovered by modern medical science, it has actually been known for centuries. In fact, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold by ancient cultures, due to their phenomenal healing properties. Dr. Valnet states, "In recent years both doctors and the public have re-discovered the medical value of essential plant oils, but the idea of using their properties to maintain or regain health goes back to antiquity... The Romans had their knowledge of essential oils from the Greeks, who in turn had received it from the Egyptians... "Hippocrates, for example, tackled the plague epidemic in Athens by fumigating the whole city with aromatic essences of plant oils. Later, in the 19th century, it is known that perfumery workers always showed an almost complete immunity during cholera outbreaks."

In tests conducted in France by Professor Griffon, Director of the French Police Toxicology Laboratory, the antiseptic effect of a blend of essential oils---including pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon---was studied in order to test the ability of the oils to purify the air of harmful disease-causing bacteria. First, Professor Griffon set up a number of Petri dishes approximately 15cm from ground level in an open room, allowing them to stand for 24 hours, the germs from the air being collected naturally as they settled into the open Petri dishes. After 24 hours he analyzed the dishes, finding them to contains 210 colonies of various microbes, including numerous molds and staphylococci. He then sprayed the mixture of essential oils in the form of an aerosol into the air in the room. After only 15 minutes, only 14 colonies of microorganisms out of the original 210 were left alive. After 30 minutes, only FOUR colonies of the original 210 were left. Importantly, ALL of the potentially harmful disease- causing molds and staphylococci had been killed within the first 30 minutes.

In another French experiment, the number of pathogenic microorganisms in various locations were measured. In a forest, there were found to be five pathogenic microorganisms in the air for every one cubic meter. In an average apartment, there were found to be 20,000 microbes in the air per cubic meter. In public stores, there were found to be nine million microbes in the air per cubic meter. On the top of a work table there were found to be five million microbes per square meter. On a carpet, nine million. And in the air of a large hospital there were found to be on average 10,000 microbes per cubic meter. According to Dr. Valnet, when an inquisitive doctor put some of the microbe-laden air from the hospital into a flask containing just a few drops of essential oils, 40% of the microbes were destroyed in only 20 minutes, 80% in an hour, and 100% in nine hours!

These scientific studies have finally jolted a small number of far-sighted researchers within the American medical and scientific community to sit up and take note of the incredible antimicrobial power of essential oils, particularly in light of today's plague of deadly antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. As today's growing plague of pathogenic, antibiotic resistant bacteria, mutating viruses, infectious fungi and disease causing parasites are becoming more & more of a threat, it is comforting to know we can have such powerful weapons as therapeutic grade essential oils. Every family needs to know about them."

Chamomile, Roman

It is also antiseptic, and astringent, and has skin healing properties; use on skin complaints like acne, weeping type eczema and psoriasis. Blend with Birch for arthritic pain. I'm back from an extended absence. I went to the first official Be Young Convention and Company Launch at the end of July and then directly to Tonga for a mission trip (http://tongamission.com). Shortly after I got back I contracted dengue fever from a mosquito bite in the tropics. Thanks to natural medicine and essential oils I am doing much better now.

The convention was amazing-- and much larger than I expected, with top speakers. Here is a brief rundown on it from the company:

Be Young 1st convention- Holding the Power "Be One" Phenomenal!

Unity was present in everyone. Our sharing partners were open and compassionate. The title of this conference was created prior to the event, then unknowingly it was also projected by everyone. You could feel the energy in the room as Dana Young opened the conference. As the founder of Be Young and formulator of the Be Young Essential Oils, Dana's conviction to be the voice of the oils was very apparent as he introduced five essential oils, Ravensara, Roman Chamomile, Juniper Berry, Palmarosa, and Damask Rose. What incredible new oils to add to your arsenal for good health.

One would think that it could not get better when Dana introduced Masaji-- Something of Worth......The Goodness of the Earth.

Susan and Alan Osmond joined us expressing how using Be Young Essential Oils strengthens families supporting One Heart. Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be Young! They are also a very large part of our sharing partners.

This only gets better. Dana introduced Dr.Guilherme Oberlaender de Almeida from Brazil. Dr. Oberlaender led us on the discovery tour of essential oil plant life in the Amazon as he showed us magnificent pictures and explained them. Paula Simoni Silverira also showed slides of some of the places we will be enjoying on our fall trip in 2010 to Brazil.

After all the excitement we were revitalized with FireBreathing taught to us by Dr. Larry Quell, director of the Transformational Health Center, P.C. Thank You Dr. Quell, we needed that. Dr. Quell was a wealth of information from the art of muscle testing and other modalities to his use of Essential Oils in his everyday practice.

Corinne Betz was so determined to get to the convention she road a Gray Hound Bus 36 hours to join us. Collectively all who heard her story contributed to funding an airline ticker for her return home.

Dr. Jerry Tennant shared research and the bio modulator. If it had not been for his own health severely challenged he would not have looked for an alternative. Dr. Tennant expressed there are no safe doses of drugs. Dana blended three oil blends for Dr. Tennant's Program called E.E.R., Exterminate, Erase and Reprogram.

Dr. Kevin Mahoney, DDS shared an amazing video showing how harmful Amalgam fillings are to your body, causing major illnesses. Did you realize there is only one kind of toilet paper that does not have mercury in it? He recommends you have the levels of harmful metals measured and if needed have the source removed. It was also from Dr. Mahoney's health challenges he was led to this type of dental practice and uses Be Young's Essential Oils with all his patients.

Dr. Mark Cochran expressed 98% of us are acidic primarily from, mold, fungus, parasites and what they excrete and 92% of the chronic problems have emotional components. STRESS. Natural preventative pet care isn't a new thing but it certainly isn't fully mainstream yet. One of the challenges is being able to re-educate the public to think outside of the box. For so many years we've been told over and over again by traditional care providers that our pets need yearly vaccinations, prevention medicines for heartworm, fleas, and ticks, and feeding premium kibble. We've been told these will all lead to ultimate wellness in our pets. Nothing could be further from the truth.

While we continue to struggle with conquering the mountain of "alternative care is for new age, crystal toting, chanting hippies", our pets are getting sicker rather than healthier. One of the most challenging problems on the rise is super resistant bacteria that are increasingly resistant to the traditional use of antibiotics. Most notably is the rise of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). This is a staph infection that the antibiotic methicillin can no longer kill. MRSA is passed from humans to pets and it is still mutating into strains in different species animals. Horses have developed their own strain and antibiotics are not the answer! In fact, the overuse of antibiotics is part of the main reason that these bacteria have mutated and evolved.

This staph infection is deadly and can and does kill humans and animals. In fact, this very thing happened to Jill Moss' most beloved white Samoyed, Bella. Jill lost Bella to this staph infection a little over a year ago. It prompted Jill to take serious action and bring the knowledge of this deadly strain of bacteria to the world so that other pet owners and people would not have to suffer the loss she has.

Jill has instituted the Bella Moss Foundation and Pets-MRSA to help bring not only knowledge about MRSA, but hope, help and healing.

Research has already begun on finding ways to stop these virulent bacteria. Scientists at the University of Manchester in England have found that three essential oils destroyed MRSA! Dr. Peter Warn, who was involved in the research, told the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) back in December of 2004 that when he tested the oils in the lab, "absolutely nothing grew. Rather than stimulating bacteria and fungi, the oils killed them off."

One diligent product formulator for a therapeutic essential oils company discovered that two of the oils used were Melaleuca alternafolia and geranium.

So why are essential oils proving so effective at killing even the most virulent bacteria such as MRSA? According to Jacqui Stringer, the Clinical Lead of Complementary Therapies at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, England which treats cancer patients, the reason that essential oils are so effective is because they are made up of a complex mixture of chemical compounds which super bugs such as MRSA find difficult to resist. I would add that because these compounds are naturally occurring and derived from plants –the "blood" of plants – no two oils are exactly alike ever, which is the perfect complex compound to combat a mutating super bug! Current treatments, according to Stringer, are made up of single compounds (like antibiotics) so the MRSA becomes resistant very quickly and leaving only 50% success in the cases of MRSA. Think about that: only a 50/50 chance of survival. Those are not good odds. The hope comes with this new alternative approach to battling these superbugs.

Another added benefit of using essential oils to combat and help prevent (prevention is the goal in stopping MRSA) the spread of MRSA is the application: inhaled either directly or by diffusing them. MRSA is often carried inside the nose so inhaling the essential oils is all that is needed to prevent patients being at risk. This makes them very easy to administer to both humans and pets.

The biggest deterrent to progressing further in the research with the essential oils and combating these superbugs has been funding. In January 2005, the Manchester researchers were having problems obtaining the £30,000 needed for their research to continue. Shortly after finding out about this, Jimmy Savile the former host of the British television program 'Jim'll Fix It", has donated £40,000 for the research to continue! The problem with the funding was that since essential oils are naturally occurring as I stated above, drug companies are really not interested in helping this type of work because they can't profit from a product that is naturally occurring since they can't be patented.

This is really reprehensible since this kind of research could potentially help save thousands of lives and completely stamp out MRSA.

I for one am very excited to see more and more research being done in bringing healing and hope to many, using what God created for us to use in the first place!
