If you look around at different companies, you will find a huge range of prices on essential oils. It makes you wonder "why?" Isn't lavender oil just lavender oil, no matter what company makes it?
Well actually there are vast differences in the essential oils from different companies. There are many different ways to extract the essential oil, and many companies take the less expensive route (athough you can't always trust the price to reflect that). Some companies extract with dangerous chemicals. Some use high heat, which does not preserve the plant's fragile healing power in the oil. Some add chemical fragrance to enhance their poor quality oil. And most commonly the company will cut the oil with a large amount of carrier oil like almond or jojoba.
Even if you find a rare essential oil company that makes pure essential oils without any of the above, there are still differences in the plants they choose. Let's look at lavender for example. A lavender plant can have very different constituents depending on many variable factors.
Is the lavender plant the very best variety for use as a healing therapeutic oil, of the over 200 types of lavender found, or is it mostly just fragrance? Most companies will use a cheaper poor quality hybrid lavender instead of a stronger therapeutic plant that costs more and is harder to find. Many companies don't even know the difference.
How was the plant raised? Was it grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers, is it organic, or is it from the wild? Was the plant grown at sea level or on a mountain side? How was the air quality and air pollution in the area? Was it grown near a highway or manufacturing plant? What was the weather, humidity and temperature range in the plant's area? What kind of water and soil did it have? All these things and more affect the plant's healing constituents.
So, how can you tell if the essential oil, like lavender, that you want to buy is a good healing therapeutic oil? The overwhelming odds are it is not.
